Could Your Property Benefit From Security Gates?

Large iron gates are used on buildings all over the world for a variety of different reasons; Buckingham Palace, Downing Street, The White House, celebrity houses, gate communities and shops all over the world install gates on their property. At RS Engineering we are able to assist our customers no matter what the situation, so join us as we take a look at some of the reasons why gates have become so popular.

Aesthetics

There are certain properties that just need gates – they add a certain character to the house and can dramatically increase the appearance of almost any property. Royal buildings such as Buckingham Palace would look very different and possibly lose some of their prestige if there were no gates out front.

Gated communities also rely on the appearance of gates to add character to the area and are often used to increase the value of the property behind them.

One of the main reasons that people choose to install gates on their property is due to security. According to the Office National Statistics burglaries on domestic properties have been decreasing over the last 20 years but there were still more than 700,000 reported incidents in 2014.

Security

Installing a gate on your property could be the deterrent needed to prevent potential criminals from breaking into your home; just look at the video below of 4 men trying to break into a house using crowbars to jimmy open the gate…

Child Safety

Children love to run around outside but this can be problematic if they are not contained within a defined area. Many primary and secondary schools install security fencing around their perimeter to ensure that children are unable to run out onto dangerous busy roads or wander off.

The same can be done for many domestic properties as well which means your child can play outdoors without you having to worry.

Insurance

The more secure your property is the better chance you have of lowering your insurance premium for both your home and your car. One important question on any car insurance policy quote is where do you keep your car overnight? If you are able to show that your car is securely protected behind gates at night then you may be able to reduce the premiums that you pay!

planning

So do you require planning permission in order to add security gates to your property?

You will do if:

  • Your fence is over a certain height. This varies depending on your local council’s policy, so it is best to check before starting work.
    • Your house is a listed building or within the curtilage of a listed building

    • The fence, gate or any other building forms a boundary with a neighbouring listed building

Fences, walls and gates however do not require building regulation approval, you can read more about planning permission and when it is required by clicking here.
In certain circumstances, if the garden wall is classed as a party fence wall and subject to the work you intend to carry out, you will be required to notify the adjoining owner of the work, however this does not apply to wooden fences.
